Copying games

What to do with this activity?

Imitation, or copying what someone else does, is one of the most important ways your baby learns. When your baby copies the sounds you make, those sounds soon become words. Babies will enjoy copying your actions and you can make it into a game.  Watch this video on the Essential Parent Youtube channel.

Your toddler will want to copy a lot of things you do as part of a normal day. Playing with mini kitchen toys lets your child copy what you do in the kitchen. If you are watering plants, your toddler will want to try it too. And next time you go in a car or on a bus, show your one or two year old how to pretend they are the driver. Don't forget to set a good example in everything for your child to copy.

  • Why am I doing this?

Play is one of the main ways that babies and toddlers learn about the world – it’s also one of the most effective ways they learn. When a child plays they refine learning skills that continue to develop during childhood and beyond.

  • How can I do more?

As a parent, you are your child’s best playmate so try to spend time every day playing together. As your baby gets older, don’t try to teach them anything during play. They will learn best if they choose what to play and you follow their lead.
