Boggle

What to do with this activity?

Boggle is a great word game you can buy in all toy shops.  It involves shaking up cubes that have a letter of the alphabet on every side.  The cubes will land in a different order every time in a container that is five letters square.  The challenge is to write down as many words as possible using the random 25 letters that are revealed.  You get more points for thinking of longer words.

You can also play Boggle online here.  It's a bit smaller than the physical game, with only 16 letters to play with.  Also, unlike real Boggle, you have to use letters that are side by side. If you've run out of ideas for words, use the rotate button and you might be able to see more possibilities.

If you prefer, just pick a longish word from a dictionary or magazine (for instance "presentation") and see how many smaller words you can make from it in the shortest possible time - "ten", "tin", "ton","tent", "son", "taste" and so on.

  • Why am I doing this?

Playing is one of the most effective ways children learn. It builds your child’s concentration and thinking skills as well as building their skills in using numbers, seeing patterns and being able to group things together. Playing games with others helps their social skills and gives them a chance to practice things they have heard and seen.

  • How can I do more?

Playing games that involve words are great for increasing your child’s vocabulary. Games that involve dices and numbers help with maths and logical reasoning.
