Summer reading

What to do with this activity?

It is really important to keep your child reading over the summer. Reading is a skill that needs to be practised and encouraged. It doesn't matter too much what they like to read, just get them reading.

To encourage young readers, public libraries around Ireland have organised a reading programme for kids called Summer Stars. Your child can sign up for it, and each time they read a book they will get a stamp on their reading card. There are book suggestions for each age group and rewards along the way.

If you are unsure about going to the library, have a look at this link and video. And enjoy this video from Irish libraries featuring book dominoes. Your local public library is a fantastic resource that is totally free, and every public library has a children's section.

As well as reading physical books, find free e-books that can be read on computers or tablets. Follow this link and find out about the 250 free e-books on the Oxford Owl website for children aged 3 to 11. You have to register with an email, but we think it's definitely worth it.

  • Why am I doing this?

Reading is like a muscle – the more your child practises it the stronger their ability to read becomes. Reading with your child, encouraging them and giving them space to read makes reading part of their everyday lives.

  • How can I do more?
