Outdoor fun with water

What to do with this activity?

Babies and toddlers love playing with water. When the weather is warm enough, take a plastic basin full of luke warm water outdoors. Let your child splash about in it as they wish. Provide plastic containers like jugs and cups, and show them how to put water in and pour it out again. Find things that float - kitchen sponges, plastic toys, or whatever you can find.

Have fun squirting each other using old washing up liquid bottles filled with water. They will love to get you wet!

Remember, never leave your child unattended when there is water nearby and make sure they are protected from the sun's rays (even when it's cloudy).

  • Why am I doing this?

Play is one of the main ways that babies and toddlers learn about the world – it’s also one of the most effective ways they learn. When a child plays they refine learning skills that continue to develop during childhood and beyond.

  • How can I do more?

As a parent, you are your child’s best playmate so try to spend time every day playing together. As your baby gets older, don’t try to teach them anything during play. They will learn best if they choose what to play and you follow their lead.
