Animal, plant or mineral

Activity

Animal, plant or mineral

What to do with this activity?

"Animal, plant or mineral" is a talking game that can be fun especially on long journeys. Here's how to play.

One person thinks of an item and says whether it is an animal, a plant or a mineral. Then the other players have to guess what it is by asking questions like "Is it big?" or "Do we eat it?". The person who thought of the item can only answer "yes" or "no" until the players get it right.

Sometimes it's a challenge to think of what category to put the item in - for instance a belt can be both animal (the leather) and mineral (the buckle). Or a book might be classed as plant because paper is made from trees. Sometimes there is no right answer, but it's good to have a discussion about it.

Scientists find it very useful to classify animals, plants and minerals. It can get very complicated - nature is so varied.
